Steel House is a premium hostel located in an iconic building in Central Copenhagen, operated by Denmark’s largest hotel group, Arp Hansen.
In sharp contrast to most other budget hostels, Steel House has many of the facilities of a 4-star hotel at a very low rate. Studio Duncalf was commissioned to design all of the public areas as well as to create the brand identity.
Formerly the home of the Danske Metal workers Union, we paid tribute to the industrial heritage of the building in our approach to the design. Stripping the interior of the building, we revealed its concrete frame which, alongside the exposed services and concrete and oak floors, creates a strong industrial vernacular to link all of the zones.
